<p>During a drunken palace feast,<strong> Belshazzar </strong>used sacred cups and vessels to propose toasts and sing praises to his pagan Gods.Immediately, a supernatural, floating hand wrote several words on the palace wall. The king&#8217;s astronomers and magicians couldn&#8217;t decode the strange script, so the king sent for Daniel, an exiled Jew, who recognized the Hebrew script and interpreted the words to mean that God had weighed the king&#8217;s transgressions and decreed his dynasty and his days on earth were coming to an end.</p>
<p>That night, Belshazzar was murdered and his kingdom divided.</p>
<p><strong>Henry Ford&#8217;s</strong> failure to <span style="color: #003366;">&#8220;read the writing on the wall&#8221;</span> was figurative rather than literal, but it led to the near-death of the company he founded in 1903, Ford Motor Company.</p>
<p>Ford dominated car sales by churning out million cars a year at a price a working man could afford. Ford&#8217;s philosophy was to give public the best value by offering a black box with a few frills &#8211; the Model T. By 1918, one of every 2 cars on the road was a Ford. The proud, headstrong Henry Ford thought he and his company were invincible.</p>
<p>But, as the country prospered, consumers started demanding more than a black box. Buyers wanted more colors, more variety, more comfort and more features. Even if they had to pay extra to get them.</p>
<p>Another company called General Motors read the writing on the wall. By late 1920s, GM offered five brands &#8211; Cadillac, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile and Chevrolet &#8211; in an array of colors and new designs every few years. GM&#8217;s sales soared as Ford&#8217;s sales slipped.</p>
<p>Henry Ford ignored the writing on the wall, saying that the Model T, basically unchanged in two decades, was fine. He attributed the slip in market share to an incompetent sales force. Frustrated workers tried to persuade Ford to modernize the Model T by surprising him with a sleek, customized version of the &#8220;tin Lizzie&#8221; upon his return from a vacation. Ford thanked them by kicking in the front windshield and jumping up and down on the roof and hood.  Model T stayed the same.</p>
<p>Ford finally relented when sales of Model T plummeted in 1927, shutting down the main manufacturing plant and sent the workers home. The company that sold 15 million Model Ts was on the brink of bankruptcy.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #003300;">The expression <span style="color: #003366;">&#8220;<em>the writing on the wall</em>&#8220;</span> refers to ominous signs or megatrends that inevitably lead to misfortune or doom. These signs are so obvious that anyone with average intelligence and a trace of common sense can see them. </span></h3>
<h3><span style="color: #003300;">Yet, even very smart people like Henry Ford in the 1920s and Ivy League-educated Wall Street bankers in the months and years leading up to the 2008 crash, missed these obvious portents of misfortune.</span></h3>
<h2><span style="color: #993300;">So why do so many people fail to &#8220;read the writing on the wall&#8221; ?</span></h2>
<h3>One of two Reasons &#8212; <span style="color: #800000;">IGNORANCE </span>or <span style="color: #800000;">DENIAL</span></h3>
<p><em>IGNORANCE</em>:  In this day and age, with information available 24/7 at the touch of a mouse, <em>claiming ignorance as an excuse just dosen&#8217;t fly anymore</em>. For example, people have always known the dangers of smoking and smokers have always chosen to pretend that inhaling cigarette smoke won&#8217;t affect their heart or lungs&#8230;until it inevitably does.</p>
<p><em>DENIAL </em>: Second biggest reason people fail to read the writing on the wall. Denial means &#8220;the unwillingness to see or admit a truth that ought to be apparent and is in fact apparent to many others&#8221;.  From Start-ups to Mature, powerful corporations have been a victim of Denial.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #003300;">A lot of business owners, network marketers, highly successful entrepreneurs &#8211; may choose to ignore or deny to embrace the internet and change their ways of doing business, especially when it comes to the raw material of generating new customers and leads from</span> <span style="color: #0000ff;"><a title="Learn Internet Marketing" href="http://farhadbillimoria.com/imarketingtraining" target="_blank">internet marketing</a></span>.</h3>

<blockquote dir="ltr"><p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>July 15: Google Inc</strong>. says that during the second quarter, marketers were willing to pay more for the online ads that generate virtually all of Google&#8217;s income, and people are clicking on the commercial messages more frequently. Those trends provide another indication that more companies and shoppers are feeling a little better about the economy.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>July 16: Gannett Co.</strong>, the largest U.S. newspaper publisher, shows signs it&#8217;s moving closer to ending a 3 1/2-year slump in print advertising, though it still didn&#8217;t feel confident enough to predict when the biggest part of its business will begin to grow again. The decline in print ad revenue narrowed in the second quarter to 6 percent.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>General Electric Co.</strong> says NBC&#8217;s broadcast operation is benefiting from continued recovery in the local ad market, with percentage growth for sales in the double digits.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>July 20: Yahoo Inc.</strong> says revenue in the second quarter looked fairly strong until June, when several large advertisers suddenly reduced their spending. Still, sales of display advertising rose 19 percent in the quarter compared with a year ago, even as the company&#8217;s search advertising revenue fell 8 percent.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>Omnicom Group Inc.</strong>, which owns marketing agencies, reports a 4.2 percent rise in quarterly net income, reflecting an uptick in spending on marketing and advertising. Overall revenue was up 5.9 percent and U.S. revenue increased 7.4 percent.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>July 22: The New York Times Co</strong>. posts its first quarterly revenue growth since 2007. The company managed to keep ad revenue flat in the second quarter, as a 21 percent jump in digital ad sales offset a 6 percent decline in print.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>Microsoft Corp.</strong> says advertisements placed alongside search results on its Bing site helped its online ad business increase revenue by 19 percent.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>July 28:</strong><strong> Comcast Corp</strong>. says revenue for local ads shown on its cable channels grew 23 percent during the quarter, led by automotive, though all categories are up in double-digit percentages.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>IAC/InterActiveCorp</strong> says revenue climbed nearly 19 percent, much of it because of growth in the company&#8217;s core search business, which includes the search engine Ask.com. Revenue comes primarily from online advertising, and that has been improving after a slump in the online ad market plagued the business throughout most of last year.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>July 29: McClatchy&#8217;</strong> reports ad revenue fell by its lowest rate in more than three years. The 8 percent decrease for the April-June period compared with last year marked the least erosion in McClatchy&#8217;s ad revenue since a 5 percent decline in the first three months of 2007 from the previous year&#8217;s quarter.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>Interpublic Group of Cos.</strong>, which owns advertising agencies, reports second-quarter results above analyst estimates &#8211; the latest indication that companies are growing more comfortable spending on advertising as the economy recovers. However, CEO Michael I. Roth acknowledges that there are still &#8220;areas of uncertainty&#8221; in the worldwide economy.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>Aug. 3: CBS Corp.</strong> reports that local advertising revenue rose 17 percent, helping lift total ad sales for the company by 9 percent. Outdoor ad revenue from billboards rose 5 percent.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>Aug. 4: At Time Warner Inc.&#8217;s</strong> cable TV channels, which include CNN, TBS, the Cartoon Network and others, ad revenue was up by 14 percent. Even Time Warner&#8217;s magazines, which face a long-term threat from competition online for both readers and advertisers, saw a modest 4 percent increase in ad sales.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>News Corp. </strong>reports that local television station advertising revenue grew 29 percent in the latest quarter because of strength in the automobile and telecom sectors. It says ad revenue at its domestic cable channels, including Fox News Channel, grew 11 percent. But ad revenue at social networking site MySpace fell.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>AOL Inc. </strong>says second-quarter advertising revenue fell 27 percent &#8211; even faster than it did in the first three months of the year. But CEO Tim Armstrong says much of AOL&#8217;s decline stems from its efforts to get rid of ad products and operations that may be contributing to its revenue but not to its earnings.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>Aug. 5: Viacom Inc., </strong>which operates cable channels including BET, MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, says that both domestic and international ad revenue climbed 4 percent from the same quarter a year ago.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;"><strong>Aug. 6: The Washington Post Co.</strong> reports a rebound in spending on television advertising. Revenue at the company&#8217;s six broadcast stations climbed 24 percent to $82.6 million as demand for commercial time picked up. Newspaper advertising declines have eased since the bottom of the recession. Still, the company&#8217;s flagship daily newspaper saw a 6 percent decline in print ad sales.</span></p>

Just as a tree is either growing or decaying, so we are either progressing or regressing. Whats the next step after a tomato grows ripe? It starts to decay. Same for humans too! We have to deliberately add in positive to see positive growth.., and just doing nothing and staying standstill will automatically yield negative results&#8230; <strong><em><span style="color: #800000;">SCARY ?</span></em></strong> <span style="color: #008080;"> </span></p>
<h2 style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #008080;"><strong>..Its the Law of Nature -</strong> <strong>Life will </strong><strong>just </strong><strong>NOT operate at standstill.</strong></span></h2>
<h3>Why Wal-Mart overtook K-Mart ?</h3>
<p>Don Soderquist, a retired senior vice chairman of the board of  Wal-Mart was at a banquet one evening and had the opportunity to meet with Harry Cunningham, the former CEO of K-Mart stores. Harry Cunningham was the legendary character who dramatically changed retail in America by developing the concept of K-Mart stores for the former Kresge company &#8212; A model Don carefully studied and considered while developing Wal-Mart stores.</p>
<p>Don thanked Harry for what he had done in pioneering the successful discounting format as we know it today.  Harry graciously accepted his praise, but was quick to add how much he appreciated what Wal-Mart had done in developing the concept even further.</p>
<p>He went on to say, &#8220;<span style="color: #333300;"><em>We made a serious mistake along the way by not changing and updating our stores over the years. We had a successful formula that was working and saw no reason to change. You folks at Wal-Mart continued to improve until you were much better than we were, and by that time, you passed us by.</em></span>&#8221;</p>
<p>Don Soderquist learned a lesson in that conversation that while success can lead to success, it could also lead to failure if you refuse to focus on improving.</p>
<h2><strong>There is magic in the extra mile!</strong></h2>
<p><strong>It is by pushing ourselves to our current maximum that we open the door of growth to a new maximum.</strong> For example, much of the growth from weightlifting comes from the final reps before you can lift no more. If you could bench press 200 pounds a maximum of 10 reps, 80% of muscle growth and increased strength will result from the final 2 reps,  and only 20% of the growth results from the first 8 reps. Last 2 reps are the hardest, but if neglected will cost you 80% of your growth.  It does not require twice the effort to achieve twice the improvement, because the final efforts of maximum exertion results in exponential returns.</p>
<p>In Business, if you were to simply work an additional 40 minutes a day, which could be achieved by taking your lunch to work and eating quickly in your office instead of going out, you would complete an additional month of full time work each year!</p>
<p>All animals below the intelligence of mankind are forced to go the extra mile just in order to survive. But man has a choice, we can get by without going the extra mile, but the riches of the world will only come to us if we stretch out the extra mile.</p>

<p>With  <a title="Facebook - Farhad's - Fans" href="http://facebook.com/farhad.billimoria.fans/" target="_blank">Facebook</a>’s  ever-changing layout, and the fact that other social sites are  encroaching on its real-time update strangle-hold, it’s easy to forget  that there are some pretty nifty tricks you can pull using your humble  Facebook status.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve pulled together few useful how-to tips &amp; tricks that  will help you get the most out of your facebook status update.</p>

<h2>1. HOW TO: Hide Status  Updates From Certain People</h2>

<p>Using  Facebook’s general privacy settings (find these by hitting “account” on  the top right of a Facebook page) you can select whether everyone, just  friends or friends of friends can see your status updates. However,  there is a way to narrow those options down even further.</p>
<p>You can  select specific friend lists to see your status (relevant for work,  special interest groups, etc.) or even individual people by name, which  is useful for anyone organizing a surprise party.</p>
<p>To take  advantage of these options, click the padlock icon just below your  “what’s on your mind” box on your wall and a drop down menu should  appear. Selecting “customize” will bring up more options such as “make  this visible to” and “hide from” with the option to make your selection a  default.</p>

<h2>2. HOW TO: Pre-Schedule Status Updates</h2>

<p>While SocialOomph, Sendible and HootSuite<a rel="http://www.blippr.com/apps/392550-HootSuite.whtml" href="http://www.blippr.com/apps/392550-HootSuite" target="_blank"> (<img src="http://netdna.blippr.com/images/inline-face_05.png?1265851550" alt="HootSuite" width="14" height="14" title="Useful Facebook Tips and Tricks Photo" />)</a> offer the same kind of service, the simplest way to schedule Facebook  status updates is by using the easy, free <a href="http://laterbro.com/" target="_blank">Later Bro</a> service.</p>
<p>Just sign in with Facebook  Connect, select your time zone, type in what it is you’d like to say,  set the calendar and clock to when you’d like to say it, and presto!</p>
<p>I personally use SocialOomph because of its flexibility with twitter and integration with blog posts.</p>

<h2>3.  HOW TO: Tag People in Your Status Updates</h2>

<p>This  was quite a big deal when <a href="http://mashable.com/2009/09/14/how-to-facebook-status-tagging/">it  was announced</a> this past September, but from the amount of searches  on the topic “how can I make someone’s name go blue in a Facebook  status?” it seems it’s not universally known.</p>
<p>To mention someone  in a status update just type “@” (<em>a la</em> Twitter<a rel="http://www.blippr.com/apps/336651-Twitter.whtml" href="http://www.blippr.com/apps/336651-Twitter" target="_blank"> (<img src="http://netdna.blippr.com/images/inline-face_07.png?1265851550" alt="Twitter" width="14" height="14" title="Useful Facebook Tips and Tricks Photo" />)</a>)  in the status bar and start typing their name as it appears on Facebook.  An auto-generated list will then come up with people in your social  circle whose name starts with the letters you’ve typed. The feature also  works with pages, brands, events and companies.</p>
<p>Hit the name you  want, complete the update, click share and the name will become a  hyperlink (you won’t see the @ symbol) and will appear in blue text.</p>

<h2>4.  HOW TO: Add Symbols to Your Facebook Status</h2>

<p>Although  there are <a href="http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=2348727531&amp;topic=3244" target="_blank">plenty of emoticons</a> that work with Facebook Chat,  typing “:)” into Facebook’s status bar will not magically transform into  a smiley yellow face. In fact, the only symbol you can create in a  Facebook status update through the shortcut keys is a ♥, by typing  “&lt;3.&#8221;</p>
<p>While this won&#8217;t bother many Facebook users, others more  used to punctuating their missives can copy and paste <a href="http://facebook-symbols.com/characters/" target="_blank">web-happy,  universal symbols</a> into the box, as you can see in the screengrab  above.</p>
<p>PC users can also access some symbols by hitting “alt” +  various <a href="http://www.spike-jamie.com/alt-codes.html" target="_blank">number combinations</a> (on a numerical keypad). So,  while smileys are yet to hit Facebook statuses, you can annoy or amuse  your buddies with symbols <em>right now</em>.</p>

<h2>5. HOW  TO: Have Fun With Facebook’s Humorous Language Options</h2>

<p>While you  can always change your setting into more sensible alternative languages,  the site offers a couple of fun linguistic Easter eggs.</p>
<p>You can  chose to have Facebook display upside down English, or, for anyone  feeling a little salty, in “pirate.” Pirate essentially turns your  status into your “plank,” your attachments into “loot” and instead of  “share” it offers the option to “blabber t’ yer mates.”</p>
<p>Sadly,  anything you type in the status bar won’t be upside down, or pirate-y.  But with the use of some external sites you can achieve the same effect.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.typeupsidedown.com/" target="_blank">TypeUpsideDown.com</a> and <a href="http://www.upsidedowntext.com/" target="_blank">UpsideDownText.com</a> are just two examples of sites that can flip your text, while the <a href="http://www.talklikeapirateday.com/translate/index.php" target="_blank">Talk Like a Pirate Day </a> site can help you with your  pirate translations.</p>

<p>You can narrow your searchable results down by gender  and keywords to find out what people are saying about a certain topic.  Or you can just browse the recent searches.</p>

<p>Have  you ever wondered how many times you have updated your status on  Facebook? The Facebook app <a href="http://apps.facebook.com/status-statistics/" target="_blank">Status  Statistics</a>,  can tell you this and more.</p>
<p>The app analyzes  your updates and gives you a tidy list of how many you’ve written, the  average word count and how many times a day you post. In addition, it  generates a graph that shows you what time of day or what days of the  week you normally update.</p>
<p>Old statuses are also searchable via the  app, so you can find that witty retort you made back in November 2009  without having to scroll back through your history.</p>

<h2><span style="color: #003366;">Losing a job is a scary prospect for families during a recession, but there&#8217;s a less-noticed problem that also hurts :</span> <span style="color: #800000;">Stagnating Wages</span>.</h2>
<p>Median weekly wages, when adjusted for inflation, fell slightly for both high school and college graduates from 2000 to 2009, according to<br />
a recent analysis by the Economic Policy Institute, a Washington think tank.</p>
<p>Major leaguer Tyson Ross bunks with Mom and Dad Tyson Ross earns $400k as the Oakland A&#8217;s youngest pitcher. But he doesn&#8217;t live in a posh bachelor pad. He lives at home &#8211; with his parents. WSJ&#8217;s Stu Woo reports.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">&#8220;<em><span style="color: #333399;">The story is often told that college graduates have done well and everyone else has not. But that&#8217;s not true,</span></em>&#8221; said Josh Bivens, an economist at EPI.<br />

<p>For high school graduates, median inflation-adjusted wages were $626 per week in 2009, compared with $629 in 2000, according to EPI. If you assume a worker gets paid for a full year, that adds up to $32,552 in 2009, down from $32,708 in 2000.</p>
<p>For college graduates, weekly wages were $1,025 in 2009, compared with $1,030 in 2000, according to EPI. Over one year, that works out to $53,300 last year, down from $53,560 in 2000.</p>
<p>&#8220;<em><span style="color: #333399;">Going forward, there could years of bad wage growth and possibly declines as the unemployment rate remains high.</span></em> <em><span style="color: #333399;">Even with low inflation over the past year we have seen wages lagging,</span></em>&#8221; Bivens said. &#8220;<em><span style="color: #333399;">The recession is so deep and widespread that even those close to the top of [the income scale] will do much worse than they have been accustomed to doing. The pain will not be spread evenly, but it will be the very fortunate worker who does not see slower wage growth.</span>&#8220;</em></p>
<p>Separate research from Hay Group, a global management consulting firm, found that planned salary increases for 2011 are at 3% for clerical,<br />
supervisory, middle management and executive positions. That 3% gain is below the 4.5% to 5% increases seen at the beginning of the decade,<br />
and the steady 4% from 2005 to 2008, according to Hay.</p>
<p>&#8220;<em><span style="color: #333399;">The past three years have seen the lowest base salary increases that most employees have ever experienced,</span></em>&#8221; the study said.</p>
<h4>The recession continues to cause businesses to be restrained when it comes to salaries, said Tom McMullen, Hay&#8217;s North American reward<br />
practice leader, in a statement.</h4>
<p>&#8220;<span style="color: #333399;"><em>HR executives are looking for ways to balance the cost of reward programs and limited pay increases with the need to attract, retain<br />
and engage key talent,</em></span>&#8221; he said. &#8220;<em><span style="color: #333399;">Many organizations are emphasizing &#8216;total&#8217; reward programs as a result &#8212; engaging employees in<br />
non-monetary ways through more meaningful work experiences, clearer career paths, global mobility and targeted development opportunities.</span>&#8220;</em></p>
<p>Hay&#8217;s forecast is based on data provided from March through June by more than 300 small to large U.S. companies.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s a family to do?</p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">&#8220;</span><em><span style="color: #333399;">The high unemployment rate is limiting many workers&#8217; bargaining power. How to deal with stagnating, or even falling, incomes? If you&#8217;re not doing so already, start living within your means</span></em>&#8220;, said Eric Tyson, author of &#8220;Personal Finance for Dummies.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;<span style="color: #333399;"><em>The silver lining [of the recession] is that it forces consumers to cut out the fat and the unnecessary spending that doesn&#8217;t provide much value</em></span>&#8220;,  Tyson said.</p>
<p>Different people have different vices. Some eat out too much, while others smoke or buy pricey drinks at bars. Some have stretched their wallet too much for a house or went overboard remodeling. And some spend on their kids.</p>
<p>&#8220;<span style="color: #333399;"><em>There&#8217;s a temptation to keep spending on your kids and rationalize it by saying you are helping them,&#8221; Tyson said. &#8220;We love our kids and we want what&#8217;s best for them, and we equate what&#8217;s best for them with buying them things.&#8221; But kids need to learn that money doesn&#8217;t grow on trees and that their family needs to live within a budget</em></span>&#8220;, Tyson said. &#8220;<em><span style="color: #333399;">The recession provides the perfect opportunity to show that mom and dad don&#8217;t have endless money,You have to draw the line and not overindulge your kids.</span></em>&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;<span style="color: #333399;"><em>One important place not to cut is retirement saving</em></span>&#8220;, said Ric Edelman, author and financial adviser.</p>
<p>&#8220;<span style="color: #333399;"><em>My concern is that someone who gets a 10% pay cut may cancel their 401(k) &#8212; that would be disastrous,</em></span>&#8221; Edelman said. &#8220;<span style="color: #333399;"><em>If you are putting away enough for retirement, it doesn&#8217;t matter how much you are spending as long as you are not creating additional debt.</em></span>&#8221;</p>
<p>It can be tough to find excess spending to eliminate. But if a family&#8217;s income falls 10%, they need to cut expenses 10%, Edelman said. &#8220;<span style="color: #333399;"><em>There will be some pain. You may have to cancel cable TV. Many families are spending $100 a month or more on cell phone contracts. It may mean eliminating an automobile, or eating out less often, and Don&#8217;t cancel your insurance so that you can keep watching HBO.</em></span>&#8221;</p>
